The Ultimate Scottish Highlands Road Trip: Campsites, Castles & Cocoa Looking for an unforgettable road trip through the Scottish Highlands? Here’s a scenic, adventure-filled itinerary that winds through rugged coastlines, jaw-dropping beaches, cozy campsites, and hidden foodie gems—complete with zip lines, puffins, and the best hot chocolate you’ll ever taste. Pack up the camper van and let’s go!

Day 1: Pick Up and Choose Your Base Pick up your camper van at 3pm, unless you have added early pickup then it’s anytime from 9am and hit the road! You’ve got two great options for your first night:

  • Glenmore Campsite, Aviemore – Nestled in the Cairngorms, this site offers a peaceful start with mountain views.
  • Beauly Campsite or Loch Ness Shores, Inverness – If you’re keen to head north, these are perfect bases to begin your Highland adventure.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Chocolate & Castles Make your way up to Dornoch, taking in these brilliant stops:

  • Rogie Falls – A stunning short walk to a waterfall, especially powerful after rain.
  • Cocoa Mountain Café – Yes, it’s a detour. Yes, it’s worth it.
  • Dornoch Beach – Golden sands and peaceful vibes.
  • Clynelish Distillery – For a dram with a view.
  • Tarbat Ness Lighthouse and Mermaid of the North
  • Brora & Dunrobin Castle – Dramatic architecture and Highland charm.

To the Edge of the World:

John O’ Groats & Beyond Snap a pic at the John O’ Groats signpost but keep going—it only gets better. Head to Dunnet Head, the true northernmost point of mainland Britain. Enjoy a beach walk, then stay the night at the Halladale Inn Campsite—complete with excellent showers, laundry, and a cozy pub/bistro on site.

Beach Hopping Bliss

Start your day with a 5-minute drive to the breathtaking Melvich Beach, then explore Strathy Beach—often empty and absolutely stunning.

Tongue to Durness

Head to Tongue and grab lunch at the Norsehouse Bakery. Their pizzas and ciabattas, enjoyed in the outdoor garden with epic views, are something special. Then it’s off to Durness. Ride the Golden Eagle Zip Line for a literal high point, and stay at Sango Sands Campsite. Right next door is another Cocoa Mountain Café, perfect for hot chocolate with a view.

Falls, Paddleboards & Pie

Drive past Clashnessie Falls, and choose between Achmelvich Beach or Clachtoll Beach for your next night. Clachtoll is a standout: hire paddleboards, roast marshmallows over a campfire, and soak in the beauty of white-sand beaches. Next up is Lochinver—don’t miss Lochinver Larder. Their pies are legendary. Take one to go and thank us later (pro tip: reheat in the air fryer if you’re camping).

Seafood & Sunsets in Ullapool

In Ullapool, choose between:
● The Lobster Shack – For fresh, local seafood.
● The Seaforth – For classic fish & chips. You can stay nearby at Ardmair Point (just 3 miles out), or press on to:
● Sands Campsite, Gairloch
● Shieldaig Camping & Cabins – Book a boat trip with local legend John for dolphin spotting. On a clear night, you might even catch the Northern Lights.

Applecross & the Bealach na Bà

Drive the iconic Bealach na Bà pass into Applecross—steep, winding, and absolutely spectacular. At the bottom, stop at The Bealach Café and say hello to Sharon (you’ll be glad you did!).

Final Stretch:

Castles & Glens From Applecross, you can head:
● Back to Inverness, or
● Down the west coast, stopping at the majestic Eilean Donan Castle, then on to Fort William. Stay at Glen Nevis Campsite, right beneath Ben Nevis. Grab a bite from the onsite food truck or head to the pub/restaurant for a celebratory meal.

The Journey Home

Wind your way through Glencoe and Ballachulish, with an optional final night by Loch Lomond—Luss Campsite is a great option. Or, just roll home with memories of an epic Highland road trip.

Final Tips

  • Bring layers—it’s Scotland.
  • Book campsites in advance in high season.
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife (and midges).
  • Leave no trace and support local businesses.

This itinerary blends adventure, relaxation, and the raw beauty of the Highlands into one unforgettable loop. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, the magic of Scotland never fades.
